Complete Streets

Complete streets are a cost-effective way to improve safety and accessibility for everyone using the road. Complete streets mean those who have to walk each day don't have to risk their lives on roads that are dangerous by design – and complete streets make walking more attractive as a choice, encouraging active lifestyles that will reap benefits for a generation.

Sen. Harkin and Rep. Matsui are backed by 11 Senators and 42 Representatives who have already become co-sponsors of the Complete Streets Act of 2009, but there's still a long road ahead. Our friends in Congress need more support for their proposal from others on Capitol Hill.

Dear Member of Congress,

As your constituent, I'm writing to urge you to support the Complete Streets Act of 2009.

The Complete Streets Act, introduced in the House by Rep. Matsui and in the Senate by Sen. Harkin, would direct state and metropolitan transportation authorities to follow complete streets policies when building federally-funded transportation projects.

Complete streets provide a full menu of transportation options to meet the needs of all the people using a road – pedestrians, cyclists, the disabled, and users of public transportation.  We desperately need such safety improvements to address our epidemic of pedestrian deaths – more than 400 per month – revealed in Transportation for America's recent report, Dangerous by Design.

Mandating complete streets for new road construction is a no-brainer.  It would ensure that we have safe sidewalks and bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and safe places to wait for public transportation.  It would help revitalize business districts, keep kids safe on their way to school, and allow seniors and Americans with disabilities to move around town with freedom and flexibility. Doing it right the first time is significantly cheaper than having to retrofit streets once they've been constructed.

One-third of Americans either can't drive or choose not to. We need to provide all of our citizens with safe transportation options in order to get to work, school, shops and medical visits, and to take part in social, civic and volunteer activities.  We need to change old road building habits so that street improvements consistently take into account the needs of everyone using them.

It can all start with the Complete Streets Act of 2009.  Please, voice your support for this smart legislation.
