The U.S. transportation sector accounts for one third of our greenhouse gas emissions, yet current climate legislation directs only one percent of funding to transportation alternatives.

The Senate has a chance to make a serious investment in green transportation - up to 10% of funding in the climate bill – but only if we act before they finalize the details of the bill.

I am writing to support the Clean Low-Emission Affordable New Transportation Efficiency Act (CLEAN-TEA, S. 575) and to urge you to cosponsor this important, forward-thinking legislation.

I write as a member of Transportation for America, a diverse coalition of more than 300 organizations throughout the country dedicated to bringing our transportation policy into the 21st century.

Clean transportation alternatives reduce emissions, create jobs, save money in the long term, provide affordable transportation options for all Americans and help keep our cities and towns livable. By including CLEAN-TEA in climate legislation you will not only ensure greater investment in low carbon transportation options, but will also help put us on the path to energy independence, reduce transportation costs for Americans, and create jobs to build out clean, green transportation infrastructure.

We simply can’t ask people to reduce their emissions without giving them the tools to do so.  Including the transportation sector in federal climate change legislation is as vital as reforming transportation legislation, as it will help ensure our climate and transportation policies operate on parallel paths.
