55 of our largest cities have lost between 15 percent to nearly one-third of their populations over the last few decades. Long-term population loss and economic decline have devastated many older cities and towns, causing widespread housing vacancy and abandonment. Vacant properties don’t just hit government resources in the pocketbook — they make neighborhoods less safe and livable for the people who continue to call them home. They drain the equity built up by individuals that allow them to send their children to college, build toward a secure retirement, and invest in the local economy. Vacant, abandoned buildings and lots also give residents one more reason to leave older, established cities or suburbs for newer neighborhoods on the edge.
With this Regeneration Act, local governments will have the ability to create the systems and tools they need to make their communities strong, vibrant, and healthy.
