Finally, a bill to give locals more access to their federal dollars

Normal, Illinois' successful Uptown Station project represents what can happen when the local leaders behind an ambitious vision are able gain access to the resources needed bring that vision to life.

Thanks to the leadership of a bipartisan group of Representatives and Senators, there’s a terrific proposal that would bring more transportation dollars — and control over them —down to the local level where they are needed most.

There’s a bipartisan bill to create a new competitive grant program in every state to allow local communities to compete directly for federal transportation funds and give them a seat at the decision-making table. It would create a program run jointly by state DOTs and local jurisdictions, allowing them to compete for a small portion of a state’s federal transportation formula funds.
