Congress is listening

Right now, members of Congress are home in their districts—home in YOUR district—listening to what people like you care about. But their recess is almost over, and they'll be heading back to Washington soon.

While they're home, this is the perfect opportunity to tell them we need action to address the epidemic of traffic fatalities that claims so many lives each year. There's a revolutionary plan in Congress to make streets safer across the country, but without your voice it won't make a difference.

Your senators and representative need to hear from you about the Complete Streets Act of 2019.

Since the Complete Streets Act was introduced, we've sent thousands of messages to members of the House and Senate urging them to support this legislation. While it's a start, it's not enough. To date, just six house members representing the 100 most dangerous districts have signed on to support this legislation.

While legislators are paying attention, tell them we need the Complete Streets Act.

What the Complete Streets Act does

The federal Complete Streets Act of 2019 does three basic things:

  • Sets aside federal funds to support Complete Streets projects (five percent of annual federal highway funds).
  • Requires localities to adopt a Complete Streets policy that meets a minimum set of standards to access funding.
  • Requires states to create a program to provide technical assistance and award funding for communities to build Complete Streets projects.

While more than 1,500 communities have passed Complete Streets policies over the last decade, a federal Complete Streets program would supercharge local efforts. And by providing real funding, it would give a much needed boost to actually implementing safer street designs.

With your support we've been able to get to where we are today, with a strong, federal policy proposal in Congress. With your continued support we can make that proposal law. Let Congress know we need action now.
