Dear Friend,
Good news: The U.S. House of Representatives is taking action to debate and vote on a multi-year transportation bill early next week.
Bad news: Right now, that bill is a major missed opportunity for giving cities, towns and local communities of all sizes greater access and control over federal transportation dollars.
But there’s more good news: We have a golden opportunity to change that, but we need your help.
An amendment from Representatives Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Dina Titus (D-NV) would give local communities more control over and access to approximately $2.9 billion more over the life of the multi-year bill. That's more money that towns and cities can invest in their local transportation priorities, whether it be a project to improve a road, increase the reach of transit, or make a street safer for biking and walking. ($2.9 billion more compared to the proposed House bill.)
But this amendment won’t get a vote on the House floor or have any chance of being included in the bill without getting more cosponsors and support before this Monday evening. Time is short: We need to drive up support now — send a message to your representative.
This bipartisan proposal works for red states and blue states, heavily urbanized areas and smaller rural towns. And it had more support than any other amendment during the debate in the House transportation committee last week.
With the Senate failing to include a similar provision in their bill earlier this summer, this is our very last chance to get it into the conversation and negotiations between the House and Senate on the new transportation law to replace MAP-21.
We’ve got just a few hours until the House decides what amendments can be voted on, so send a message now.
And while you’re taking action, write down the phone number for your representative’s office and then pick up the phone and deliver the same message.
Thanks for all you do,
James Corless
