Last week we hit the one-year mark of SAFETEA-LU's expiration. On the same day, Congress went on recess and representatives returned to their districts. Until a new legislative session convenes in November, Members of Congress are going to be spending a lot of time with their constituents and they want to know what's most important. It's time we remind our delegations that transportation reform is vital to our communities.
In many states we will be holding events to raise transportation as an issue in the media and in our neighborhoods. Let's get people talking so it can be a priority when congress reconvenes. Follow up with your T4America organizer to see what's happening near you.
Join us for our partner call this Thursday, October 7th, 3pm ET, to get more information on the actions over the next month and preparing for the lame duck session.
In a meeting with advocates at the end of September, Secretary LaHood said that they have the go-ahead from the White House to move a six year bill in 2011, with a full proposal accompanying the President's budget request for FY12 in February, according to USDOT sources. T4America and national partners are meeting with USDOT staffers to convey our priorities as they work on drafting the language.
Over on the Hill, Congress is out on recess until a post election session in November and December. This means any movement on the Senate version of the transportation bill will be paused until lame duck. Also during that period Senator Reid is looking to introduce energy legislation, and other members are looking for a vehicle in which to attach the Livable Communities Act.
In the meantime, we can expect to see TIGER II, High Speed Rail, and HUD Sustainability grants announced in October.
